Is this a tourist trap? Yes. Is it one of the most stunning lakes you'll ever see? Yes. Will it be busy during the Summer months? Definitely yes. Should you go anyways? 100% YES! Emerald Lake is a true gem of the Rocky Mountains and must be seen at least once. It is an easy drive right off the Trans Canada Highway near Field BC. It will be busy and you may have to walk a bit after finding a parking spot, or you could do like we did and just circle the parking lot like a shark and lung at the first site of a tourist pulling out!
Just spend the money and rent a canoe
Once you have taken in the sheer beauty of Emerald Lake, you will quickly notice the red canoes contrasting the stunning green water. This is the ultimate tourist trap. You will tell yourself that you don't need to spend the $100 on the rental. That you don't need the iconic postcard photos for yourself. But then you realize that if not now, then when? So buck up, pull on the credit card and go for a paddle around the lake. You will not regret it. The Boat House Trading Co provides you with the canoe, paddles and lifejackets. If you aren't familiar with canoeing, they will even give you pointers on how to navigate the boat. This is a very safe environment to give paddling a try.
Look extra 'Canadian'
Make those memories extra Canadian by renting a flannel jacket and tan hat. You will look the part wearing your Canadian Dinner Jacket! I thought this was silly t first but then I thought about it - if you are someone visiting our country, go ahead and have some fun! Why not, eh?
Visit for a few hours or stay a few nights
After driving past the Emerald Lake Road turn off a few Summers, we decided to take the side trip and check it out. We spent a total of 3 hours there including a nice paddle. You could easily spend the day here and take in a hike around the lake. Or, if you are looking to really immerse yourself into the Rocky Mountains book a stay at the Emerald Lake Lodge. We toured around the lodge and have it on our wishlist for a future trip. We hear that it is just as stunning in the Winter as well.
